Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not a disease, but a complex disorder resulting from a neurodevelopmental variation that impacts brain functioning and is evidenced by a wide range of conditions characterized by challenges in social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and non-verbal communication.
Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think, and problem solve can range from high-functioning individuals to people with severe difficulties. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live completely independently.
According to worldwide statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there has been an increase in the incidence of ASD from 1 in 10,000 in the year 1970 to 1 in 54 in the year 2016.
